I'll only approve if you get the one with round headlights. The later ones just don't look good.

If you care that much about what other people think, then you definitely can't handle a Miata, so might as well get this.

I have one, and I don't care in the slightest about what people think.
The 2.0 with the four-speed automatic is agonizingly slow, but that just means that you can drive it flat-out all the time. Combined with pretty-good handling (for a hatchback with the roof chopped off), it's actually a pretty good time. Plus, driving with the roof down is undeniably fun.
Mine's got 200,000 miles on it, is horrendously rusty, the windscreen is cracked, and the roof is full of holes. But it just won't die, and honestly, I don't think that I could part with it. It puts far too much of a smile on my face.

Don't worry about that. If people see you secure and happy in it they are gonna think you're awesome.

I say drive what you wanna drive, being a Mercury fan it isn't the most popular lol
I heard those things had vicious electrical issues though. I'm sure there's a VW guy on here who will explain that away though

The automatics aren't that rewarding to drive. The 5-speeds are better. The ABA motor will leak like a sieve, but it will probably never stop running (unless the electronic throttle body poops itself).
Honestly, if you need a cheap drop-top to schlep around you and three friends, unless you want to step up to a BMW E30 or E36 convertible, this isn't a bad car. Beware that they are all the red-headed stepchildren of the VW world, an odd amalgamation of Mk.3 and Mk.4 Volkswagen parts, with a healthy dollop of model-specific bits.
